International Program

In partnership with the School District # 8 International program, LVR hosts International students from a variety of countries around the world.  Students live with local host families and attend LVR Secondary School for a full or part year.  Students will generally be accepted into a September or February semester start-up.

Hosting opportunities are available for interested students and their families or community members.

There are two ESL courses available to students in the District’s International Program; however, all English as a Second Language students are eligible to benefit from these language and culture-rich courses.  Each student will develop and preserve a pride of their heritage while developing an understanding and appreciation for cultural differences and similarities.  Each student will develop communicative skills in the four areas of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) 10 Indicator of Success:  This course is designed for the student who is new to Canada and/or who is at a beginner to lower intermediate level in English.

Description:  This course is designed to enable English as second language learners to develop their abilities in the four main areas of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Central to the language acquisition is a cultural component.  Using Tapestry (level 3), students will address the four areas of language acquisition with a thematic approach through culture.  There will be various scheduled cultural excursions and events throughout the course to enable students to become acquainted with the culture of the school, the community of Nelson, and Canada.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) 11 Indicator of Success:  This course is designed for the student who is at an intermediate/higher intermediate level in English who needs some further extension in the English language.

 

Description:  This course is designed to enable the English as a second language learner to extend their abilities in the four main areas of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  This extension course will use the Tapestry (level 4) series which also addresses language with a thematic approach through culture.  There will be various scheduled cultural excursions and events throughout the course.
