Welcome to course selection for 2011-2012
The selection of courses is an important part of the process leading to graduation and post-secondary education, training or work. Courses you select are the stepping-stones to your future. We encourage you to discuss options fully with your parents, teachers and counsellors to ensure you select the best choices for your academic and personal development.
The decisions and choices you make here determine which courses we run next year. While there may be some opportunities to change your mind about your course selections, options may be limited because of the choices you are making now. What you choose during this process will determine in part your schedule for next year, so please choose carefully.
Please note the following:
1. We cannot guarantee that all courses in this book will be offered. Insufficient enrollment will result in courses being cancelled.
2. Priority will be given to grade appropriate placements. For example, a Grade 11 student may not be scheduled in a Grade 12 course if all seats are required for Grade 12 students.
3. Students and parents need to be aware that promotion to the next grade level is dependent upon passing required courses. For example, if a student fails Grade 10 English, the course must be repeated and passed before he or she can continue in Grade 11 English. Generally, grade determination is dependent on the level of English scheduled.
4. If a student fails a course, we cannot guarantee that there will be space available to repeat the course during the same school year.
5. While students are asked to select individual courses, some of the courses may be presented in multi-level groups.
6. Students must have a sound educational reason to change courses after the schedule has been set. Students have the opportunity in grades 10-12 to make course changes – either in the summer by appointment with a counsellor, or in the first week of each semester.
7. Students who choose to take a distributed learning course through the Consortium of Distance Education Schools of BC will be provided with support from teachers and will be permitted to write exams at LVR, under counsellor supervision.
8. Students with a DESK support block will be in a classroom with a teacher for assistance. Attendance will be expected. Students may work at home with permission of parents.
9. The following priority system is in place for loading students into classes (from high to low):
i. grade appropriate first time enrolees;
ii.first time enrolees who require courses based on graduation program requirements;
iii. courses being repeated to meet graduation requirements;
iv. out of grade first time enrolees
v.out of catchment students
