Textiles 11
TEXTILE STUDIES 11 Indicators of Success: Clothing & Textiles 9 or 10 recommended
Course Fee: There is a course fee for this course for take-home projects, for fabric & supplies.
This course is a hands-on course. Time is spent perfecting existing sewing techniques and learning new sewing techniques. Students choose 4 sewing projects according to their needs and abilities. To guide individual pattern selection, a check list of minimum basic techniques, which must be mastered by the end of the course, is given (for example: zippers, collars and sleeves). A wide selection of fabric choices is permitted with the emphasis being on obtaining experience in handling a variety of fibre and fabric types. Students will also become familiar with the handling and uses of the serger.
In summary, this course gives the student a complete background in sewing and serves as an excellent base for the more advanced Textiles Studies 12.
TEXTILE ARTS AND CRAFTS 11 Course Fee: There is a course fee for take-home projects, for materials and supplies.
This course will explore a variety of textile construction techniques (crochet, quilting, macrame, knitting), fabric decoration (batik, tie dye, appliqué, beading, hand embroidery), cottage industry crafts (fabric photo albums/picture frames, stuffed animals (bunnies, bears), holiday crafts, floral shampoos, rinses and soaps), and home decorating (duvets, pillows, curtains, kitchen accessories). Several small projects are planned throughout the term so that students can try as many techniques as possible. This course is a good choice for students who do not necessarily enjoy sewing to produce clothing but do enjoy crafts and decorative sewing. Basic sewing skills are an asset, but not required. Students will also complete 2 – 4 major projects of their choice using techniques learned in class.
