Alternative ways to demonstrate learning and earn credits
EQUIVALENCY
♦Equivalency has been fully implemented since September 1997.
♦Recognizes documented learning from outside the BC school system that the Ministry and the local school districts deem equivalent to the learning outcomes of a Ministry-Authorized or Board/Authority-Approved grade 11 or grade 12 course.
♦Where the Ministry has not assessed equivalency credentials from other institutions, school boards have the authority to determine equivalency, e.g., credit could be granted for a local Dance Studio program that is an 80% or better match of the learning outcomes for Dance 11: Performance.

EXTERNAL COURSES
♦The Ministry approves some certificates from outside the BC school system for recognized credit towards graduation.
♦The learning outcomes of external courses will not necessarily match the contents or outcomes of provincially developed curriculum, e.g., External Music 11 and 12 credits could be earned for Conservatory of Music programs completed.

INDEPENDENT DIRECTED STUDIES
♦Allow a student to initiate, develop and complete his or her own study, under the supervision of a teacher, over and above the learning outcomes of a Ministry-Authorized or Board/Authority-Approved Course. An additional 2 or 4 credits could be accumulated in this way.
♦Students pursue learning outcomes independently and beyond those normally taught in the classroom, e.g., credit could be granted for IDS Physical Education 11 for an independent physical education program.
